Argentina winger Nicolas Gaitan has agreed a “deal with Manchester United”, according to the player’s agent and the move is awaiting the approval of the Benfica vice president.
Gaitan, 27, was a target for United during the latter stages of Alex Ferguson’s reign, but if the quotes attributed to his agent, Jose Irribaren, are true, he could be on the move to Old Trafford this summer.
However, the potential transfer is yet to be approved by Benfica.
“Everything is possible, there is a deal with Manchester United,” Irrabaren said.
“The will of the player is that everything goes well. We are waiting for a response from the vice president, which is why I cannot say much more.”
Gaitan began his career at Boca Juniors in Argentina before moving to Benfica in 2010 as a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Angel Di Maria.
In his five years at Benfica, Gaitan has won back-to-back Primeira Liga titles in 2013/14 and last season, four Portugal league cup trophies and the 2014 Portugal Cup.
He has been capped nine times for Argentina.
