Argentina confident of passing Ivory Coast test

SHARJAH // Preparing for their sternest test thus far, Argentina remain confident that their quest for a first Fifa Under 17 World Cup title will last past tonight's encounter with Ivory Coast.
The South American champions take on the African side in the quarter-final at Sharjah Stadium, knowing victory would move them a step nearer the trophy that continues to evade them.
In 12 previous attempts, Argentina have never progressed beyond the last four. However, Humberto Grondona's side have gradually improved through the tournament, with three successive wins raising hope that their 13th participation could be a lucky one.
"We've prepared the same way as usual," Grondona said. "We're always ready for the most difficult challenge we can face.
"We know African teams are very athletic and strong, and they have always done well in youth tournaments, but we know that Argentina is very strong, too.
"It's another tough game, but we are well-rested and focused."
While Argentina anticipated they would arrive at this juncture, Ivory Coast have spent the past few matches trying to justify their current status as the best U17 team in Africa.
Their Group B results began with a defeat and a draw, and only a belated triumph against New Zealand guaranteed progression. Yet they improved significantly to oust the talented Morocco in the last 16 on Tuesday, leaving Matias Sanchez, Argentina's playmaker, in little doubt they represent a considerable threat.
"It'll be the toughest game we played so far," he said. "If this opponent got this far, they must be good.
"But we have to play our game. We're more concerned to carry out our ideas, than our rivals'."
