‘Ambitious’ Tottenham Hotspur pry Clinton N’Jie loose from Lyon for up to €17 million

Cameroon international forward Clinton N'Jie has joined Tottenham Hotspur from Lyon on a five-year contract, the two clubs announced on Saturday.

Lyon said that Tottenham had agreed to make an initial payment of €14 million (Dh57.1m), potentially rising to €17m with add-ons, for N’Jie, who turned 22 on Saturday.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Clinton N’Jie from Olympique Lyonnais, subject to international clearance and the player receiving a work permit,” Spurs announced on their website.

N'Jie said: "I'm very happy to join Tottenham, such a big club in England. I'm still young, still growing up and it's a big challenge – the Premier League is one of the biggest leagues in the world.

“The club is ambitious and I’m ready to give my best to help the club achieve its aims.”

N’Jie is Tottenham’s fourth signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of defenders Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld.

He will provide competition for last season’s top scorer Harry Kane and plugs a gap in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s squad created by Roberto Soldado’s departure to Villarreal on Friday.

N'Jie made his Lyon debut in November 2012 and played 43 times for the club, netting all of his seven Ligue 1 goals last season as Hubert Fournier's side finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain.

But with his path to the first team blocked by Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fekir and new signing Claudio Beauvue, he has elected to pursue his career in North London.

N’Jie, who can play wide or through the centre, has made 11 international appearances for Cameroon, scoring six goals.
