As the Arab region faces substantial challenges on all fronts, the UAE is working hard on shaping policies that can lead to sustainable development and, at the same time, participating in a wider regional dialogue to achieve security and prosperity.
As The National reported this week, the World Government Summit, from February 12 to 17, will tackle some important questions about the current state of the region, its future and development potential. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, will lead the discussion by sharing his leadership experience, presenting his views and leading a questions and answers session on the revival of development in the Arab world.
This shows the UAE commitment to taking an active role in the #ArabFuture, which is the official hashtag that Sheikh Mohammed launched this week to spark a truly pan-Arab dialogue. This year, the Global Dialogue on Happiness will also be held before the summit with more than 300 experts discussing how government can bring people happiness rather than only satisfaction.
The UAE believes that the happiness of its population is important for the country to achieve its goals. It was innovative in introducing a Minister of State for Happiness, making efforts to boost happiness an essential part of governance.
The country has also been keen to spread tolerance, compassion and the spirit of giving in the community, announcing 2017 as the Year of Giving. Last week, thousands of creative ideas and suggestions were generated during the Giving Retreat. These will be used to develop a sustainable strategic framework for humanitarianism. The country already has a remarkable record when it comes to humanitarian work abroad and now the focus will shift internally.
As Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister for Cabinet Affairs and the Future, said, the future of the UAE will be strengthened by both economic progress and humanitarian efforts. The ministry has already registered 200,000 volunteers. Among the individual initiative was businessman Yaqoub Al Ali's donation of Dh100,000 to help in the release of inmates serving time for financial debts.
Fostering a great sense of empathy is important for societies to maintain peace and prosper. This is one of the key messages that the UAE is aiming to deliver. Happiness is complex but it involves compassion, coexistence and understanding. The Arab world has been struggling to combat the evils of intolerance and can benefit from our experience.

What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood when your kidneys fail and can no longer do the job.
It gets rid of your body's wastes, extra salt and water, and helps to control your blood pressure. The main cause of kidney failure is diabetes and hypertension.
There are two kinds of dialysis — haemodialysis and peritoneal.
In haemodialysis, blood is pumped out of your body to an artificial kidney machine that filter your blood and returns it to your body by tubes.
In peritoneal dialysis, the inside lining of your own belly acts as a natural filter. Wastes are taken out by means of a cleansing fluid which is washed in and out of your belly in cycles.
It isn’t an option for everyone but if eligible, can be done at home by the patient or caregiver. This, as opposed to home haemodialysis, is covered by insurance in the UAE.

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
The taxidermy centre was established 12 years ago and is headed by Dr Ulrich Wernery.

The Emirates Charity Portal
You can donate to several registered charities through a “donation catalogue”. The use of the donation is quite specific, such as buying a fan for a poor family in Niger for Dh130.
The General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments
The site has an e-donation service accepting debit card, credit card or e-Dirham, an electronic payment tool developed by the Ministry of Finance and First Abu Dhabi Bank.
Al Noor Special Needs Centre
You can donate online or order Smiles n’ Stuff products handcrafted by Al Noor students. The centre publishes a wish list of extras needed, starting at Dh500.
Beit Al Khair Society
Beit Al Khair Society has the motto “From – and to – the UAE,” with donations going towards the neediest in the country. Its website has a list of physical donation sites, but people can also contribute money by SMS, bank transfer and through the hotline 800-22554.
Dar Al Ber Society
Dar Al Ber Society, which has charity projects in 39 countries, accept cash payments, money transfers or SMS donations. Its donation hotline is 800-79.
Dubai Cares
Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Emirates Airline Foundation
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
Emirates Red Crescent
On the Emirates Red Crescent website you can choose between 35 different purposes for your donation, such as providing food for fasters, supporting debtors and contributing to a refugee women fund. It also has a list of bank accounts for each donation type.
Gulf for Good
Gulf for Good raises funds for partner charity projects through challenges, like climbing Kilimanjaro and cycling through Thailand. This year’s projects are in partnership with Street Child Nepal, Larchfield Kids, the Foundation for African Empowerment and SOS Children's Villages. Since 2001, the organisation has raised more than $3.5 million (Dh12.8m) in support of over 50 children’s charities.
Noor Dubai Foundation
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Noor Dubai Foundation a decade ago with the aim of eliminating all forms of preventable blindness globally. You can donate Dh50 to support mobile eye camps by texting the word “Noor” to 4565 (Etisalat) or 4849 (du).

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
