Will the Avatar sequels sink or swim?

Avatar director James Cameron revealed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last week that he's planning four sequels to the blockbuster sci-fi movie by 2023, instead of the three that he has discussed initially.

Hollywood loves sequels and spin-offs: the Star Wars and Star Trek movies, Harry Potter, the Furious series and every possible superhero variant. The popularity of the originals guarantees an audience, because people know what they're going to get. In a world of widespread film piracy, and where some of the most profitable markets are non-English speaking, Hollywood especially likes sequels with easily identifiable characters doing easily understandable things – and lots of CGI, explosions and stunts that look great on the big screen.

Understandable, but dull. Some stories only need to be told once. Still, we are certain that Hollywood is desperate for Cameron to make a sequel to his other vastly profitable film – just as soon as he can find a reason to raise the Titanic.
