Even those of us only vaguely familiar with the world of professional cycling know that there is significance to the colour of the jerseys worn by competitors. When the first Abu Dhabi Tour is held next month, the colours will have even greater resonance. Certain competitors in the four-stage, 555-kilometre race will be wearing jerseys that reflect the four colours of the UAE flag: red, green, white and black.
The National will be sponsoring the white jersey to be worn by the best under-25-year-old rider in the overall classification. In doing so, we are not just helping to promote the sport of road racing, we are building on our previous initiatives to encourage cycling as a recreational pursuit for everybody.
With the cooler months approaching, and hundreds of kilometres of cycling paths available across the country, this is an ideal opportunity to take up an accessible and enjoyable activity that has many proven health and fitness benefits.
