There is nothing like absence to make the heart grow fonder. And for three years, the capital's cultural calendar has had a gaping hole in it. Thankfully, that void will soon be filled, when the much-loved and much-missed Abu Dhabi Classics programme returns on October 14 for the start of its extended 2014-15 run.

Once again, the programme will trail a succession of high-calibre performances by the likes of the classical violinist Gidon Kremer, the Catalonian composer and viola player Jordi Savall, the French pianist Lydie Solomon, as well as famous orchestras.

The series will also bring together different cultures and people, none more so than The Traveller, an event that features the intersection of contributions by artists from more than 20 countries.

That’s not all. As this newspaper reported, the programme will also focus on the role of education and knowledge transfer in the field of music, with artists visiting schools and universities in Abu Dhabi to inspire the young generation of artists and musicians.

What could be better than some of the world’s best musicians performing here? Some of the concerts will be in historic sites like Al Ain’s Jahili Fort, creating a confluence of the best music in atmospheric venues.
