When we think of areas rich in biodiversity, lush rainforests teeming with life, high mountains and vast oceans come to mind. And for good reason: these places have ideal climate conditions for flora and fauna to thrive.
This part of the Arabian Peninsula with its harsh weather conditions is often considered to be one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. Yet it does play host to a variety of flora and fauna. Consider the latest discovery of a new ant species – lepisiota omanensis – in the mountains near Al Ain.
In addition, 30 more species of insects and spiders considered firsts for the UAE have also been observed by scientists. Many residents and citizens find it surprising that our country has so many varieties of species.
These finds prove that we have barely scratched the surface of the desert. These discoveries will hopefully encourage more people to look further into our complex environment.
