Few can ignore the menace of reckless driving on our roads. Yet, we continue to have reports that illuminate the severity of the problem and remind us that we are not yet on the verge of eradicating the problem. Take, for example, the story of a motorist who accumulated Dh200,000 in traffic fines.
As The National reported yesterday, the motorist clocked up fines and 81 black points across the country, from Abu Dhabi to Umm Al Quwain. Thankfully, authorities have now seized his two vehicles and have banned him from driving.
This case underlines the need to expand cooperation and information sharing between various government bodies. There was a clear pattern to this person’s reckless driving, both in his own car and one borrowed from a family member. Vigilance through increased communication and information sharing between police forces will ensure that bad or reckless drivers are kept off the road. It is a small step to better road safety for all of us.
