Who knew that Kit Kats are made in the UAE? As The National reported this week, the Nestle Dubai Manufacturing NMC plant has been operating at Jebel Ali for seven years, and also makes Nido powdered milk, Quality Street chocolates and various Maggi brand products. It's good to know that manufacturing is alive and well, and that some of the products being made, while foreign in origin, are being tailored to local tastes.

A lot is said about the knowledge economy – and for good reason, because it’s essential to the future. Factories that make physical products we can use, and employ a lot of people, seem old-fashioned and unimportant in comparison. That’s a shame.

What’s missing is some positive publicity. Companies that are manufacturing here should shout about it, with promotional materials, advertisements and stickers on their products declaring: “Proudly made in the UAE”.
