Let the Games begin

In uncertain times, the Olympics should remind us about an important principle

With the Olympics set to begin in Rio de Janeiro today, some are wondering whether the event is relevant any more. Even before the flame has been lit at the opening ceremony, many Russian competitors were disqualified due to organised doping. This, on top of recent scandals at the football controlling body, Fifa, and in world cycling, has led to widespread cynicism about organised sport.

It is also true that things are not perfect in Rio, with delays and scandals affecting the construction of venues and claims of shoddy workmanship at the Olympic Village. But the city has already pulled off a successful World Cup and it should be given the chance to show the world that it is also up to this task.

From a UAE point of view, we’re excited that a record 13 of our athletes, including four women, are participating. The whole nation will be cheering when swimmer Nada Al Bedwawi carries the UAE flag into the Maracana Stadium at the opening ceremony.

The Games are about friendly competition that brings the people of the world together. No matter which country wins the most medals, we hope that the Olympic spirit triumphs.
