Free Wi-Fi is the best connection

Internet access has become so important in our lives that, like access to power and water, it has become an essential utility. We need it to keep in touch with family and friends, to pay bills, to order products and services, and to connect with government, employers and clients. But for people on low incomes, paying for internet access can be a financial burden. Even those who can afford a connection at home – perhaps by pooling resources with others – may not be able to afford mobile access as well.

That is why we welcome the initiative by du to provide free Wi-Fi access in Dubai locations including its retail outlets, Dubai Media City, Global Village and on Dubai Tram and Metro services. Users will be required to watch a short advertising video in return for an hour's internet access at a restricted speed. Of course, premium services will still carry a fee, as they should, but access to basic connectivity will make a positive difference to many people. The internet is a necessity now – in public spaces – like electric lights.
