The start of the Indian Premier League this week served not just as a reminder of the cricketing prowess of the Kolkata Knight Riders, who in an echo of last year's opening match once again convincingly defeated the Mumbai Indians. The win by the defending champions also reminded us that a year ago, this head-to-head had been played at Abu Dhabi's Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Last year’s temporary relocation was caused by the Indian election but that was a gift to this country’s millions of avid – some might even say obsessive – cricket fans. For two weeks, we were treated to some of the best limited-overs cricket in the world and we didn’t have to travel very far to see it.
This time we’ll have to watch the action on television, but it’s worth raising the prospect that maybe there are grounds to once again stage some of the IPL here in the UAE. The teams can be assured of venues full of adoring fans.
