Amazing grazing

As The National's Arts & Life section noted this week, the district of Khalidiya has become home to a cluster of small restaurants that reflect the diversity of cuisine available in Abu Dhabi and offer a welcome respite from the ubiquitous fast-food chains. Dips with a French flavour, sushi, hot dogs, pasta and local favourites like shawarma are on offer within a short distance of each other.

While the capital has never been short of interesting places to eat, it’s good to see a neighbourhood dining scene that’s evolved organically and is thriving on its own, away from the hotels and shopping malls. Khalidiya’s proximity to the Corniche is another bonus, meaning that the district may appeal to people who want to incorporate some grazing after a trip to the beach.

Perhaps our tourism authorities should look at promoting the Khalidiya enclave and other “eat streets” to visitors who are looking for something special off the beaten track.
