Palestinian Authority security forces continued fighting militants in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Monday, amid a recent series of rare deadly raids that have sharply escalated tensions between the region’s residents and the PA.
The authority, which partially governs the West Bank, launched its largest operation in years last week to regain control of Jenin, long a centre of Palestinian resistance over which the PA has all but lost control. At least three militants have been killed, including commander Yazid Ja’aysa, as well as one civilian, with about 20 people injured.
The operation is being viewed as a pivotal test for the organisation, which has fast been losing legitimacy among its subjects, particularly in the north of the West Bank, amid accusations of widespread corruption and helplessness in the face of mounting Israeli violence, both from the military and settlers.
Jenin, and in particular its refugee camp, is a stronghold of the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad and, to a lesser extent, Hamas. Violent raids in West Bank refugee camps are typically the preserve of Israeli security forces, whereas the PA focuses on less risky arrests and efforts to rehabilitate gunmen.
Tensions nonetheless increased last week between the PA and militants after security forces attempted to arrest Jenin residents who stole vehicles belonging to security forces. The following day, a car bomb went off next to a police station that wounded three servicemen and two civilians.
Israel has long accused Iran of funding militant activity in the occupied West Bank, where attacks against Israelis have increased in recent years. Despite a close security relationship, relations between Israel and the PA have come under strain in recent years, particularly during the far-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the Palestinian side frequently accusing Israeli authorities of delegitimising it and disrupting cash transfers.
The US, which along with other Western states plays a key role in financing and training PA security forces, asked Israel to approve further American assistance amid the operation, Axios reported on Sunday.

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

Who is Tim-Berners Lee?
Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in a household of mathematicians and computer scientists. Both his mother, Mary Lee, and father, Conway, were early computer scientists who worked on the Ferranti 1 - the world's first commercially-available, general purpose digital computer. Sir Tim studied Physics at the University of Oxford and held a series of roles developing code and building software before moving to Switzerland to work for Cern, the European Particle Physics laboratory. He developed the worldwide web code as a side project in 1989 as a global information-sharing system. After releasing the first web code in 1991, Cern made it open and free for all to use. Sir Tim now campaigns for initiatives to make sure the web remains open and accessible to all.
