Jordan labour minister's resignation letter leaked

Jordan's labour minister resigned this week, after an additional investment promotion portfolio was taken away from him in a Cabinet reshuffle.

Maen Qatamin said in his resignation letter, leaked to local media on Monday, that “the real solution” to solving Jordan’s unemployment woes was “making fundamental change in the kingdom’s investment environment.”

He accused Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh of not giving him the chance “to make real change.”

After the reshuffle, Jordan’s investment promotion authority became the sole department in charge of the field.

Mr Qatamin, 53, previously worked as manager of former prime minister Abdullah Ensour's office and has a degree in political science from Jordan University.

Jordan is in recession and the official unemployment rate is at a record 23.9 per cent.

In Sunday's Cabinet reorganisation, Jordan’s King Abdullah appointed new interior and justice ministers after a high-profile breach of coronavirus rules by their predecessors.

Eight other ministers were also appointed in the reshuffle. The health, finance and foreign ministers remained unchanged.

The king appointed Mr Al Khasawneh, a former diplomat, as prime minister in October amid a surge in coronavirus deaths.

New Cabinets and reshuffles are common in Jordan.

Mr Al Khasawneh is the country’s 12th prime minister in the past 20 years.

What are NFTs?

Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.

You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”

However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.

This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”

This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

Family reunited

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was born and raised in Tehran and studied English literature before working as a translator in the relief effort for the Japanese International Co-operation Agency in 2003.

She moved to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies before moving to the World Health Organisation as a communications officer.

She came to the UK in 2007 after securing a scholarship at London Metropolitan University to study a master's in communication management and met her future husband through mutual friends a month later.

The couple were married in August 2009 in Winchester and their daughter was born in June 2014.

She was held in her native country a year later.

What is an ETF?

An exchange traded fund is a type of investment fund that can be traded quickly and easily, just like stocks and shares. They come with no upfront costs aside from your brokerage's dealing charges and annual fees, which are far lower than on traditional mutual investment funds. Charges are as low as 0.03 per cent on one of the very cheapest (and most popular), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, with the maximum around 0.75 per cent.

The first ETF was launched as recently as 1993, but the sector boasted $5.78 billion in assets under management at the end of September as inflows hit record highs, according to the latest figures from ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm.

There are thousands to choose from, with the five largest providers BlackRock’s iShares, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisers, Deutsche Bank X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.
