A large fire has engulfed three warehouses in Iran's north-eastern city of Mashhad, the country's semi-official ISNA news agency said.

These belong to household appliance manufacturer Electrosteel, ISNA said on Tuesday.

"There are currently 100 firefighters at the scene," it said.

"Due to the extent of the fire and thickness of the smoke, there is no information regarding potential victims."

Sixty fire engines and water tankers arrived at the site to prevent the flames spreading to nearby warehouses and the gas tank of the factory, US-based news channel Iran International said.

Officials said the warehouses cover an area of about 2,000 square metres.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

In October, eight people were killed in a fire at Tehran's Evin prison during a fight between prisoners in a sewing workshop.
