This sport – freestyle motocross – is my life. I train every single day, six to eight hours a day, with no time for vacations or holidays. I like to invent new tricks, which is a good way to make FMX progress and become a more interesting sport. It takes a long time – several years – to invent and perfect a new trick, but it is important to me to always show the different aspects of FMX. I work hard for that.
I repeat my tricks for hours every day. I work on new tricks and I improve the older ones. When you practise such a dangerous sport, there is always the risk of serious injury. Do I get scared? We need to be scared. If you are not scared you do not have any limits and it can be a lot more dangerous.
In FMX you need to practise a lot and be ready for competitions, to be as precise and concentrated as you can to limit the risks. In the past, some riders have been a bit crazy and taken risks; parks were also more dangerous. But today freestyle motocross has become a professional sport with serious riders and safe parks, but hopefully we have still kept a bit of the madness.
I started motocross in 2000. I had been practising BMX in the 90s but I realised I missed an engine. In 2005, with my brother Charles, we tried freestyle and really enjoyed it. In the beginning it was only for fun, but very soon we practised seriously. It was hard for my parents to have two sons involved in such a dangerous sport, but they respect our choice and try to deal with it. Of course, they are afraid during contests, but they often come to encourage me.
I won the Red Bull X-Fighters competition for the first time in Munich, Germany, in 2012. That year I finished second in the world and won the World Tour the following year, which was a career highlight for me. But it’s not all ups. I went through a very difficult period in 2009 when I wasn’t succeeding. I stopped competing for two years and started working with a sports psychologist.
At the beginning of this year, I won a gold medal at the X Games in Austin, United States, then I won two steps of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour in Spain and South Africa. I hope to also win the last one in Abu Dhabi this month and become the world champion for the second time.
I am always motivated by the crowd at these events. They are so enthusiastic, which makes me want to do my best and give my maximum energy. It is important to follow our dreams and FMX is my dream, even if it is a lot of work and risk.
Tom Pagès, from France, is a freestyle motocross rider known for his difficult and complex tricks. He will compete in the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour finale on October 30 on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. www.redbullxfighters.com
