We have been sipping cups of green tea for a while now as a healthy alternative to black tea, but there is a new tea in town – and recent studies show it may have even more health bene¿ts than green tea. Rooibos, or redbush tea, had been somewhat of a South African secret but word of its benefits is quickly getting out. Unlike green tea, Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free. According to research conducted in Japan, the tea also has anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Studies also show that Rooibos has extremely high antioxidant levels, which have been shown to promote heart health and reduce inflammation. Green tea also has an impressive antioxidant profile, but Rooibos contains two relatively rare and additional antioxidants. Studies show they not only help the body reduce stress but also help stabilise blood sugar levels and glucose tolerance, which is excellent news for those with type 2 diabetes. And because it is caffeine-free, it is also a great alternative for kids – and has even been put forward as a remedy for colic in babies.
