Public and private sector workers in the UAE are set to get a five-day long weekend to mark the country's 49th National Day.

With overseas travel largely on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, most getaway plans will be happening locally. If you're still undecided on whether to book a staycation and where to go, The National is here to help. We've rounded up staycations across every emirate – 16 in total – and each is offering something interesting to see or do or a special rate for the public holiday.

From a golfcation in Ajman to a designer staycation in Dubai, each of these hotels is offering National Day stays that will cost you no more than Dh1,500 a night.

There's plenty to discover in the UAE's smallest emirate, including Al Zorah Golf Club, a world-class course set among the emirate's natural mangroves. Abu Dhabi’s newest hotel is gearing up for the long weekend with an offer exclusively for UAE residents. Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers’ National Day offer gives guests early check-in, late check-out and a daily buffet breakfast.

The Abu Dhabi Edition

Tucked away from the buzz of the city and surrounded by rolling fairways, The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is offering a Stay & Refresh package this UAE National Day. Guests booking the offer will get daily breakfast at Fairways restaurant for two adults and two children, plus afternoon tea for two adults. There's also Dh150 credit per night to spend at restaurants and bars across the resort. Anantara Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi Hotel

Connect with nature at Anantara Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi Hotel this National Day. Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa

For an east coast escape, the Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa in Al Aqah offers a five-star stay with a gorgeous Al Hajar mountain backdrop. One of the biggest beach resorts in the emirate, the Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa is a good pick for a family-friendly seaside escape on a budget. Located about 60 kilometres from Dubai, it's far enough to feel like you've escaped the hustle, but only takes an hour to reach from the city. Craving more of an adventure this National Day? Head to Ras Al Khaimah for a night at The Dunes Camping & Safari. Located in the Al Jazeera desert, this place has everything you need for a stay under the stars. Breakfast and dinner is included and there are bathroom and shower facilities, a majlis area and a stage where live Arabic entertainment takes place. There are several types of accommodation, from deluxe domed tents to stilted tree houses – however, most have already been reserved ahead of the long weekend. If you’re quick, you can still book into one of the remaining igloo tents, which will give you a more authentic camping experience. Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.

2. E-invoicing in the UAE

Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption. 

3. More tax audits

Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks. 

4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime

Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.

5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit

There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

6. Further transfer pricing enforcement

Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes. 

7. Limited time periods for audits

Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion. 

8. Pillar 2 implementation 

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services

Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations. 

10. Substance and CbC reporting focus

Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000.
