New flights increase summer schedules
Etihad Airways (www.etihad.com) has announced an increase in the number of flights that it operates to Greece and Cyprus over the summer period. From July 2, Etihad will increase its Abu Dhabi to Athens route with the introduction of three new flights, increasing from seven to 10 flights per week. In Cyprus, it will increase its core frequency on its Abu Dhabi to Larnaca route from three to five flights per week and also operate to Larnaca as a daily service during the peak summer period from July 1 to September 30.
Reduced rates at hotels across the GCC
Hotels across the Gulf have announced reduced rates for summer. From June to September, but excluding the period from July 28 to August 10, Citymax Hotels is offering room rates starting at Dh150 per night for its Sharjah property, Dh239 for its Bur Dubai hotel and Dh299 for its Al Barsha property, all including taxes but not including tourism fees. Rooms must be booked at www.citymaxhotels.com and terms and conditions apply.
At Atlantis The Palm, families booking with a Visa card can get a rate of Dh1,914 per night, including taxes but excluding a tourism fee (Dh20 per room, per night), based on two adults and up to two children under 16 sharing a room, from May 15 until September 30 (some blackout dates and other terms and conditions apply). The rate includes one night's accommodation, buffet breakfast, lunch or dinner, two spa sessions for the price of one and daily access to the Kids Club or Club Rush. In Oman, the Chedi Muscat has launched a summer rate starting at 111 Omani rials (Dh1,059) per room, per night, including taxes, breakfast, a three-course dinner for two and a 30 per cent discount at the spa, 20 per cent off food and soft drinks and a non-alcoholic minibar. The offer is valid from May 15 to August 31, subject to availability (www.ghmhotels.com).
Andy Murray’s hotel served an early ace
A hotel owned by the tennis player Andy Murray has been named the best in Scotland, despite only having been open a month. Cromlix, a Victorian mansion in Kinbuck, Perthshire, was bought last year by the 26-year-old, who is the British number one and is currently ranked as the eighth best men’s singles player in the world, and has undergone renovation.
The 15-room luxury hotel is set in extensive grounds, including tennis courts, and has an opening rate of £199 (Dh1,230) per night, including taxes and breakfast, valid for stays during June, July and August (www.cromlix.com). This week, it was announced that it has been named the Scottish Hotel of the Year in the Scottish Hotel Awards.

The flights
There are direct flights from Dubai to Sofia with FlyDubai (www.flydubai.com) and Wizz Air (www.wizzair.com), from Dh1,164 and Dh822 return including taxes, respectively.
The trip
Plovdiv is 150km from Sofia, with an hourly bus service taking around 2 hours and costing $16 (Dh58). The Rhodopes can be reached from Sofia in between 2-4hours.
The trip was organised by Bulguides (www.bulguides.com), which organises guided trips throughout Bulgaria. Guiding, accommodation, food and transfers from Plovdiv to the mountains and back costs around 170 USD for a four-day, three-night trip.
