With school days reduced to five hours during Ramadan, parents looking for something special to do with their children after school are in luck. The Green Planet bio-dome is offering free entry for every child dressed in their school uniform when accompanied by a paying adult, from 1pm to close. This gives families the chance to experience educational, hands-on activities with more than 3,000 plants and animals. See exotic wildlife such as sugar gliders (pictured below), South American toucans, emerald tree boas, Tamarin monkeys, sloths and take part in the venue’s newly launched Australian Walkabout, which includes lizards, turtles, wallabies, pythons, spiders, frogs and birds that come from the outback, tropics, mountains and desert of Australia.

The highlight of the day takes place at 4pm with the piranhas’ live feeding session. Head to the Flooded Rainforest to witness the sight of 1,000 red-bellied piranhas devouring their food by taking bite-sized chunks of flesh with their razor-sharp teeth. Experts will be on hand to educate guests about the aggressive South American fish.

Plus, see the world’s largest indoor man-made and life-sustaining tree, a Seba bat cave and explore four levels that reflect life in a rainforest: the canopy roof, mid-story with large-leafed trees, the dark and humid forest floor, and the flooded rainforest aquarium with marine life including stingrays.

The free-ticket offer is available weekdays during Ramadan from 1pm to close.

Open 10am to 7pm, Sundays to Wednesdays; 10am to 8pm, Thursdays to Saturdays, from Dh89 when purchased online; from Dh99 at the door, The Green Planet, City Walk, Al Wasl, Dubai, 04 317 3999, www.thegreenplanetdubai.com
