Stars turn to children's clothing

If your wardrobe could be described as anything but young and fun, take a lesson from celebrities who've discovered a novel way of keeping up with the cool kids.

The diminutive star of stage and screen Kristin Chenoweth, who has appeared on television in The West Wing, Pushing Up Daisies and Glee, freely admits to shopping in children's departments for her wardrobe staples. Possessing a so-called "matchstick-slender" body type, Chenoweth favours the cut and detailing of the younger ranges, especially when it comes to trousers.

"Besides," she says, "there's something really fun about discovering fashion from an unexpected source."

Indeed, for petite ladies out there, buying teen jeans is often a viable option as it avoids trips to the tailor to adjust waists and hemlines. As kids' clothes can be cheaper, the practice can also save money.

Another fan is the interior designer to the stars Athena Calderone, who stepped out in New York recently wearing a snug denim jacket courtesy of GapKids.

"I wear it with almost everything," she says "With black jeans and a shirt by day, and with a dress at night."

With a growing number of designers offering children's wear, this trend seems ready to build on the momentum created when France's first lady Carla Bruni was snapped performing on stage in a Stella McCartney military-style jacket, designed for GapKids in 2009. More stylish offerings will be available when the brand's new collaboration with Diane von Furstenberg hits stores next spring.

So while it's arguably true that youth is wasted on the young, at least their designer and demi-couture fashion lines won't be.
