Mercedes-AMG E63 gets a new look but it's still a strapping beast

It was nippy before, but the latest in the manufacturer's E-Class range has had a series of tweaks to make it even more of a mover

Mercedes-AMG has just launched its latest E63 and, like its predecessors, it’s a predictably strapping and sleek affair.

The latest in the manufacturer’s E-Class range has got different look, though. The new E63 has had what they’re calling an extensive design update, with the new bodyshell now looking the way it does as a result of various technical alterations (that is, they had to rejig it to get a bit more efficiency and oomph).

The restyled front end, for example, has been transformed by a larger air inlet than on previous models and, at the rear, the boot section has been reworked to ensure a superior aerodynamic effect.

The performance stats are, of course, impressive – the E63 is powered by a 4-litre V8 biturbo engine that produces 612 horsepower and will get you from 0 to 100 kilometres per hours in 3.4 seconds. That thing they call the 4MATIC system will send power to all four wheels, or just the rear two if you fancy a distinctly squirrelly driving experience.

It’s not just the exterior Mercedes have had a play with – the inside has also had a bit of work done, too. There is an enhanced widescreen cockpit, a new AMG steering wheel adorned with buttons and gizmos, and the MBUX infotainment system with touchscreen and touchpad. Containing, of course, the usual bewilderingly vast amount of information the manufacturer likes to give drivers.

And, let’s not forget, the Hey Mercedes voice-activated system, designed to ensure you don’t actually need to take your hands off the wheel at any time.

The seats are upholstered in nappa leather, designed for comfort on long journeys, but if you fancy something a little more sporty, and providing rather less comfort on long journeys, you can order a performance variation.

Mercedes is remaining schtum about potential costs. The car is likely to arrive in the UAE at the tail end of this year, though, so we’ll find out what buyers will have to pay nearer the time.
