The intriguing southern Spanish city of Córdoba was the location for this month’s fashion shoot. Dating back to Roman times, Córdoba was seized by the Islamic Umayyad Army in 711, and in 766 became the capital of the new Muslim emirate, Al Andalus.
Ruler Abd-ar-Rahman I began work on the Mezquita, or the Great Mosque, blending Umayyad architecture with both Roman and early Christian styles. Subsequent caliphs continued building – adding a minaret, arches, domes and mosaics, making it one of the most important buildings in the Islamic world.
Under Islamic rule, Córdoba became one of the largest cities in the known world, with a population of over 400,000, and during the 10th and 11th centuries, was a centre of culture, philosophy and learning.
For our fashion story, photographer Ezra Patchett used the city’s historic walls as a backdrop to the latest pre-fall fashion collections, which are captured in an enticing play of light and shadow.
