Spruce up your satin shoes

Satin shoes need to be cleaned with extreme delicacy. Here are some tips to help you get rid of those unsightly stains.

Satin shoes look great but stain very easily and can be a real pain to clean. You have to treat satin with extreme delicacy, even if you are trying to get rid of a particularly persistent stain.

To start with, gently wipe all the dust and dirt off the shoes using a dry cloth. If you don't wipe them down first you'll end up rubbing the dirt back into the fabric.

One of the simplest ways to clean satin is to gently rub a stale piece of bread back and forth over the stains. Be sure to follow the weave of the fabric. The bread will lift dirt and grime out of the fabric. It sounds strange, but it's a method favoured by ballerinas - and they know a thing or two about satin shoes.

If that doesn't do it, try seltzer water. Dip a cotton ball into seltzer water and gently wipe it over the stain, following the grain of the fabric. Keep repeating with a fresh cotton ball until the stain has disappeared. Then dab a dry cotton ball over the wet spot to remove any excess water. To finish off the drying process, use a hairdryer on a cool setting. Never let satin shoes air dry as you'll get water spots and streaks.

For more stubborn stains, repeat this process using methylated spirits - but test on an out-of-the-way spot first.
