Six of the Best: Cityscapes

  • English
  • Arabic

Views of the city have always been a popular theme for art and photography, and in recent years depictions of street scenes and urban landscapes have also become an increasingly visible design trend, particularly in printing, textiles and ceramics, reflecting a renewed appreciation of contemporary and historical architecture and the vibrancy of city living.

Touch the sky

The Destinations wallpaper collection by Mr Perswall includes this black-and-white line-drawn depiction of a skyline featuring some of the world's best-known skyscrapers - from Dubai's Burj Khalifa to the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the CN Tower in Toronto. The collection comes in standard sizes but can also be customised to the exact size of your wall, so if you're looking for a truly striking feature wall, this is for you. Dh209 per square metre, including delivery anywhere in the GCC, www.mrperswall-gcc.com

Park life

The Brighton-based Sukie specialises in wonderful retro screen-printed stationery and textiles, including this cushion depicting the silhouette of the view across the boating lake in New York City's Central Park. The design is printed on the front and back. Another equally vibrant design featuring the skyline of the French ski resort Chamonix is also available. £22.50 (Dh133), plus shipping, www.notonthehighstreet.com

Secret love

Color Industry is a Dutch brand dedicated to making stylish home products for children, but its Streets of Amsterdam range, featuring soft furnishings, wall stickers and storage items, such as this lockable trunk for your most secret or treasured possessions, look just as good in a child-free home. On sale via the Dubai-based web shop Filini, the box is made of galvanised steel and measures 65cm x 35cm x 22cm. With its simple, vibrant design, this is one storage solution that doesn't need to be hidden away. Dh445, www.filini.com

Flashback

One of our favourite contemporary ceramic design teams, People Will Always Need Plates, has extended its collection to include prints, coasters, tea towels and trays, each featuring its distinctive line-drawn architectural images of British landmarks and industrial buildings. The Eclectic Avenue range imagines what a street would look like if it contained English houses from the past 200 years, from the archetypal Georgian town house to a contemporary modular home, complete with matching modes of transport. £17.50 (Dh103), plus shipping, www.peoplewillalwaysneedplates.co.uk

London calling

You could look at Nick Patchitt's fantastic print every day and still spot something new. Nestling among the silhouettes of the landmarks and buildings of London are the faces of English icons from Winston Churchill to Sid Vicious alongside logos, signs and sayings that capture the essence of British cultural life. Available in red on white or red on buff. There's also a similar version of Brighton. £55 (Dh325) plus shipping, www.welovebritish.co.uk

Hej ya!

This fun interpretation of city life in Stockholm, screen-printed in the national Swedish colours blue and yellow (naturally), is the work of the Swedish artist and illustrator Ingela P Arrenhius, whose work is inspired by the design of the 1950s and 1960s. It's too cool to dry the dishes with; we suggest mounting and framing it as wall art. Check out her Paris version, too. £11 (Dh65) plus shipping, www.hunkydoryhome.co.uk

Your rights as an employee

The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.

The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.

If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.

Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.

The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.
