Six of the Best: butterfly buys

  • English
  • Arabic

Reflecting this year's wider trend for all things flora and fauna, home accessories with a butterfly design or motif have been inescapable this summer. And whether it's a delicate detail on a porcelain plate or a bold decorative statement on your walls, it's a theme that delivers a pretty, feminine look wherever it lands

1. Wall decor

We feature wall stickers regularly because they're a simple, striking and non-permanent way to decorate empty wall space in a rented apartment. The butterflies in this set of 24 stickers are patterned with a delicate floral-effect design, and would work well in either a pretty Parisian-themed boudoir, or a children's nursery. Dh132, plus Dh60 shipping charge, www.spincollective.co.uk

2. Table talking point

This polished silver brass placemat/trivet makes a great centrepiece for a dinner party table. Durable and solid enough to accommodate piping hot dishes, it's also pretty enough to leave out on display permanently. Butterfly placemat, Dh145, Zara Home, Dubai Mall and Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi.

3. In bloom

If you're looking to host a vintage-themed tea party, this delicately scalloped Lenox porcelain accent plate would look just the part. Based on an original illustration by Louise le Luye, the pretty design depicts a solitary butterfly hovering by a stem of a wild meadow flower, with a delicately drawn bumblebee and ladybird filling out the scene. Meadow Blue Butterfly Accent Plate, Dh55, Bloomingdale's, Dubai Mall.

4. Box of delights

The Californian-based Fringe Studio presents its products as if they were little works of art and we love the vibrant illustrated packaging used for this set of three scented soaps, on sale in Bloomingdales' homeware department. The only problem is they are far too pretty to unpack. Check out the full range of Fringe's exquisite home accessories and gifts at www.fringe-studio.com. Fringe soap set, Dh150, Bloomingdale's, Dubai Mall.

5. Sticky subjects

These domed solid glass magnets look like miniature Victorian paperweights, encasing a butterfly collectors' delicate specimens. Depicting a range of species and colours, this classier breed of magnet will bring a touch of vivid colour to any metallic surface. Parlane magnets, Dh99 for a set of six, The One stores nationwide.

6. All sewn up

We came across this luxuriously embroidered cushion in the children's department of Zara Home, but we found it also works equally well when set against a simple white/cream sofa or bed linen. It also captures this summer's trends for pinks, florals and embellished cushions. Butterfly cushion, Dh150, Zara Home, Dubai Mall and Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi.

Key figures in the life of the fort

Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa (ruled 1761-1793) Built Qasr Al Hosn as a watchtower to guard over the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.

Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.

Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (ruled 1966-2004) Moved the royal residence to Al Manhal palace and kept his diwan at Qasr Al Hosn.
