We have an antique poster from 1904 that was damaged by our movers, so we need to have it restored. Do you know of any company in the UAE that could do this for us?
I'm not surprised that you want to take care of your poster. Apart from its aesthetic and sentimental value, it could be worth a fortune. In 2005, a poster for the 1927 science fiction movie Metropolis set a world record when it fetched $690,000 (Dh2.5 million).
The first question to ask is whether it really needs to be repaired. If the damage is not extensive, some collectors would be quite happy with a poster that is a little rough around the edges - they believe it creates character and makes the original stand out from pristine replicas.
If you do repair the poster, think long and hard about how and where. A few years ago it would have been unthinkable to get it repaired in the UAE, but the country's fast-growing art scene is attracting a small but highly skilled community of experts. Most of them are auctioneers and curators, but there are a few craftspeople who might be able to help. Try a reputable gallery such as Art Select at Emirates Towers in Dubai. They will give you honest advice on whether or not they can fix it.
It is likely that you'll have to send the poster overseas for repair. The United States is the world's most sophisticated market for this, and home to a number of expert repairers and restorers. They will advise you on how to package your poster before you send it to avoid more logistical headaches. The guys at Posterfix in New York (www.posterfix.com) were particularly helpful when I contacted them.
Typically, restorers will charge about $50 (Dh185) per hour spent on your poster, plus materials. As well as repairing the damage, they may also be able to retouch parts of the poster that are looking tired. Your poster is more than 100 years old, so I'm guessing it must be a little worn. Again, think hard about whether you want to restore the poster to its original glory, or enjoy the weathered, aged look.
Finally, think about how you will preserve and protect your poster over the next century. Linen backing is a popular technique for making your poster more durable. A professional restorer will mount your poster on cloth (traditionally it has been linen, although most people today use cotton duct, which is much cheaper and does the job just as well).

The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. It's up to you to go green
Nils El Accad, chief executive and owner of Organic Foods and Café, says going green is about “lifestyle and attitude” rather than a “money change”; people need to plan ahead to fill water bottles in advance and take their own bags to the supermarket, he says.
“People always want someone else to do the work; it doesn’t work like that,” he adds. “The first step: you have to consciously make that decision and change.”
When he gets a takeaway, says Mr El Accad, he takes his own glass jars instead of accepting disposable aluminium containers, paper napkins and plastic tubs, cutlery and bags from restaurants.
He also plants his own crops and herbs at home and at the Sheikh Zayed store, from basil and rosemary to beans, squashes and papayas. “If you’re going to water anything, better it be tomatoes and cucumbers, something edible, than grass,” he says.
“All this throwaway plastic - cups, bottles, forks - has to go first,” says Mr El Accad, who has banned all disposable straws, whether plastic or even paper, from the café chain.
One of the latest changes he has implemented at his stores is to offer refills of liquid laundry detergent, to save plastic. The two brands Organic Foods stocks, Organic Larder and Sonnett, are both “triple-certified - you could eat the product”.
The Organic Larder detergent will soon be delivered in 200-litre metal oil drums before being decanted into 20-litre containers in-store.
Customers can refill their bottles at least 30 times before they start to degrade, he says. Organic Larder costs Dh35.75 for one litre and Dh62 for 2.75 litres and refills will cost 15 to 20 per cent less, Mr El Accad says.
But while there are savings to be had, going green tends to come with upfront costs and extra work and planning. Are we ready to refill bottles rather than throw them away? “You have to change,” says Mr El Accad. “I can only make it available.”

Two-step truce
The UN-brokered ceasefire deal for Hodeidah will be implemented in two stages, with the first to be completed before the New Year begins, according to the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
By midnight on December 31, the Houthi rebels will have to withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa and Al Saqef, coalition officials told The National.
The second stage will be the complete withdrawal of all pro-government forces and rebels from Hodeidah city, to be completed by midnight on January 7.
The process is to be overseen by a Redeployment Co-ordination Committee (RCC) comprising UN monitors and representatives of the government and the rebels.
The agreement also calls the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces in the city and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure distribution of aid across the country.

How Filipinos in the UAE invest
A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest.
Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent).
Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.
