A clean, organised fridge means less time trying to find that vital ingredient, less waste and less chance of contamination.
Start by taking everything out of your fridge. Throw away expired items. Remove all shelves and drawers and wash them in warm soapy water. Wipe down the interior surfaces with a damp sponge and clean sticky jars before returning them.
When you're putting things back, group them together in a way that makes sense to you. Fruit should be stored in its original packaging or plastic bags, in a designated drawer.
You should never store meat in the same drawer as your fruit and vegetables - wrap it and store on the bottom drawer.
Don't overstock, as this will increase wastage and ensure that hidden items go unused. Two small shopping trips a week rather than one big one means that you'll be more efficient and probably save money.
Check the temperature of your fridge - the ideal is around 5°C. Also, keep an open box of baking soda in the door to eliminate unwanted odours.
Lastly, keep a notepad attached to your fridge door and write down which items are running low, keeping you prepared for your next trip to the supermarket.
