All you need to know here is that there are no rules. If you are planting bulbs or plants, you can use absolutely any container that you fancy — a cooking bowl, a metal pot, a crate, a teacup, a basket ... really anything that you have to hand that takes your fancy.
If you are using a container that is not watertight, line it first with a bin bag. Cut a piece of bin liner so that it’s big enough to come to the top of the container. You can trim it once you have added the soil so that you don’t see it. Next, put a layer of potting soil in the bottom of the container, as high as you need it to be so that the bulbs or plants will sit at the right level — near the top but low enough to be covered with another layer of soil.
Put in your bulbs/plants, cover over with extra soil and pat down firmly. Don’t forget to keep the container well watered, so that the soil is always moist but not waterlogged.
Another plant-related tip: A good way to keep indoor plants hydrated is to spray them with a mist of water every day.

Managing the separation process
- Choose your nursery carefully in the first place
- Relax – and hopefully your child will follow suit
- Inform the staff in advance of your child’s likes and dislikes.
- If you need some extra time to talk to the teachers, make an appointment a few days in advance, rather than attempting to chat on your child’s first day
