Patriotic feasts worth dining out on

National Day is on everyone’s minds this weekend, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes using their menus to show their patriotism. Some of our favourites worth a try this weekend include Coya’s special dessert - the passion chocolate marquise, dark muscovado centred, maracuja snow (well, that’s a mouthful) - looks delicious. If that’s not mouthwatering enough, try the specially curated National Day menus at Burger & Lobster, 7 Elephants Dubai and other restaurants across the Emirates.

Artistic flavour comes to D3

If you have artistic flair and like the same in your dining experience, you'll want to seek out the new Italian restaurant at Dubai Design District. We're loving the colourful interior at Benvenuto al Larte Dubai, an outlet straight out of Milan offering a "multi-sensory" dining experience. The vibrancy of this D3 gem complements the menu, which features rarely seen dishes including oven-baked ziti ragu and truffled clams casarecce. It's worth putting on your dining hit list of new listings in the city. Call 04 240 0441 or see www.dubaidesigndistrict.com

Float into the weekend

If you've got friends visiting or just want a new take on The Dubai Fountain why not check out the view from the new floating platform. The Boardwalk is very cool in that it allows you to get up close to the world's largest performing water feature. Start from Burj Park or the fountain promenade and stroll down the 272-metre platform – you'll be just nine metres from the fountain itself. It's open from 5pm to 11pm daily and costs just Dh20. Well worth it, we'd say! Go to www.burjkhalifa.ae

Now you can get closer to the Dubai Fountain on a floating platform.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.

  • In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
  • Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
  • Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.

What is Reform?

Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.

It was founded in 2018 and originally called the Brexit Party.

Many of its members previously belonged to UKIP or the mainstream Conservatives.

After Brexit took place, the party focused on the reformation of British democracy.

Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson became its first MP after defecting in March 2024.

The party gained support from Elon Musk, and had hoped the tech billionaire would make a £100m donation. However, Mr Musk changed his mind and called for Mr Farage to step down as leader in a row involving the US tycoon's support for far-right figurehead Tommy Robinson who is in prison for contempt of court.
