If you’re anything like me, one of the countless children of the 1970s and 80s with a soft spot for the Mr Men and Little Miss kids’ books, then the prospect of revisiting your youth via a grown-up culinary link-up with the characters should at least raise a nostalgic smile.

Sushi Art’s cartoon-tastic limited-edition box certainly revives personal memories of trying – and because of limited pocket money, failing – to buy all the books with a childlike OCD desire to complete the picture that was formed on the spines of the books if you lined up the entire collection.

For Dh195, you get enough sushi to feed a small family – 42 pieces, to be exact – mirroring the colourful shades that became synonymous with the bright, bold characters created by English author and illustrator Roger Hargreaves. It all comes in a cute box decorated with some of the best-loved Mr Men and Little Misses, including that orange scamp Mr Tickle on the front, resplendent in an itamae’s hat and brandishing a sushi knife.

The most interesting morsels from the box proved to be the veggie California rolls (featuring quinoa and beetroot), while the tastiest were arguably the pair of salmon teriyaki sushi. Elsewhere, there’s something for all sushi tastes, including salmon tataki spring rolls and crispy chicken caesar rolls.

If you aren’t quite as hungry or don’t have an army over for lunch, three of the box inclusions are also available as stand-alone orders: spicy tuna sushi (Dh12 per piece), veggie California roll (Dh26 for six pieces) and salmon tataki spring roll (Dh36 for six pieces).

On the face of it, it seems a bit odd to choose such a culinary genre for this cross-pollination, given that sushi is pretty much a food-based kryptonite to most children, but perhaps that’s the entire point. While today’s generation of youngsters are busy entertaining themselves with 21st century toys, apps and video games, the big kids among us can relive a tiny bit of their childhood while feeling awfully adult about our dining selection.
