It's currently white truffle season and, as you might expect, these rare, highly expensive delicacies have been making an appearance on menus at several high end restaurants of late- the taste of luxury is always well appreciated in the UAE, after all.I recently ate at Reflets par Pierre Gagnaire, where they're currently offering a white truffle menu costing well over Dh2000 per person; due to an archaic (and to my mind quite insulting) system, females receive menus without prices. Unknowingly, I ventured that we might try said menu - my partner silenced me with a look.
Anyway, it seems that Japanese restaurant Zuma has got one up on their rivals by sourcing the largest ever truffle to reach the UAE.
The prized tuber, which is sourced from Alba in northern Italy, weighs in at 349g and because of the rainless summer was apparently even more difficult than usual to find. At the beginning of the season a truffle hunter in Italy was charged with sourcing the Zuma team a “mega truffle”. Last week, the truffle above was discovered and was sent via special cargo to Dubai.
If you’d liked to sample their precious bounty, it’s currently being shaved onto all Zuma a la carte dishes that feature truffle or can be added to any dish on request for Dh150 per gram (minimum order 2 grams).
