Proving that big fashion houses are increasingly addressing issues of sustainability, Italian giant Salvatore Ferragamo has just launched its Rainbow Future shoe.
Based on the shoe the house first created for American singer and Wizard of Oz actress Judy Garland in 1932, this latest incarnation is still a hand-finished platform, but the suede has been replaced with organic crochet work (certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard), dyed with natural colours, and lined in leather that was finished using the Layertech technology, with zero water consumption and carbon dioxide-emission.
Using water-based glue, non-galvinsed brass and 100 per cent recycled sewing thread, the Rainbow Future comes in a cotton bag and an FSC cardboard shoebox, both of which are 100 per cent biodegradable and recyclable.
The Rainbow Future shoe is part of Ferragamo’s Creations line, an exclusive collection of shoes that draw on the company’s vast archive, re-creating – in strictly limited numbers – famous shoes from the past, all made by hand using the original techniques. Carrying the Made in Italy label, the Creations collection is created with social responsibility in mind, and is supported by Treedom, a Florentine company that will plant 100 orange trees in Sicily to offset any CO2 emissions.
Ferragamo was an Italian shoe designer, who made shoes for many of Hollywood's most famous actresses including Garland, Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth.
