Buzzwords like "street wear" and "athleisure" have taken the fashion industry by storm in recent years, redefining the nature and purpose of the basic trainer. No longer is it reserved for walks, jogs and gym sessions - it's now widely accepted as daily footwear, whether you're in the office or sitting front row at fashion week.

Still, the trainer sector has been somewhat monopolised by key brands like Yeezy, Adidas, Nike and Puma, with their respective Boost, Stan Smith, Airmax and Fenty Creeper shoes (created in collaboration with Rihanna) proving particularly popular.

But sportswear label Asics is not one to be kicked to the curb. The brand's Tiger label, which is inspired by Japanese culture and incorporates high-performance alpha gel, has just launched the Gel-Kayano Trainer Knit – a shoe that features a colourful knitted exterior with sporty rubber supports, a thick white sole and built-in laces that don't require tying. The trainer is available in multiple colourways, all featuring the mutli-toned effect created from the Space Dye technique of using different-coloured dyes on single threads.

To give the new shoe an urban, fashion focus, the brand is releasing a series of videos highlighting creatives around the world, with the Gel-Kayano Trainer Knit incorporated into their outfits. The first video stars London-based model and visual artist Daniel Pacitti:

The Asics Gel-Kayano Trainer Space Dye Knit costs Dh625 and is available at leading sportswear retailers.
