The Happy Box: Activity of the month

Creating concentric circles, based on Wassily Kandinsky’s 1913 Squares with Concentric Circles, is one of the projects in the May edition of The Happy Box, which revolves around art appreciation.

Linda explains: “Our Concentric Circles project is based on feeling and attaching a colour to that feeling. We recommend listening to music to help do just that. Choosing music without lyrics or a song in a foreign language can make that task easier. If you don’t know the words to a song, your only reaction is pure emotion.” The parent and child can then discuss each of these emotions and select colours that reflect their feelings when completing the project.

Here’s how to do it

• Fold the black construction paper into four squares then flatten it out.

• Use the coloured papers to trace and cut out pattern circles in varying sizes: small, medium, large and extra large.

• Discuss how the music you’re listening to is making you feel and select the first four colours. Talk about why each colour was selected as you work. Change the song or type of music every time you work on a new section of the artwork.

• Glue the coloured circles to the background. Continue, working in concentric layers, until you have filled in all four areas of the black construction paper.

• Date and sign your masterpiece.
