Prince George at six: the young royal celebrates his sixth birthday

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released new photos to celebrate

Britain's Prince George turns six today and to celebrate, Kensington Palace has released three new beaming portraits of the future king.

In two of the photos, the young royal is seen wearing an England football kit and sports a green polo shirt in the third.

"Happy birthday Prince George! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share new photographs of Prince George to mark His Royal Highness's sixth birthday," the family said in an Instagram caption as they released the new snaps.

"This photograph was taken recently in the garden of their home at Kensington Palace by The Duchess of Cambridge," the caption of the two photos of George in his football kit detailed. "Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages!"

The photos show a smiling and laughing young prince, with a notable gap in his happy, toothy smile.

The third photo, the couple said, was also taken by George's mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, but on a recent holiday.

The new candid photos show off George's happy personality.

British newspaper The Sun recently reported of the playful young royal: "Some people might be surprised to hear that George's favourite things are spending time with his mum, cooking pizzas from scratch and pottering about in the garden."

The newspaper's source added: “The Prince of Wales, his grandad, has been particularly delighted to see how George has taken to nature and the great outdoors.”

Prince George is the eldest child of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, who welcomed Princess Charlotte in 2015 and Prince Louis in 2018.
