The Middle East’s largest Lego event is coming to Dubai Festival City Mall this month, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Dubai Shopping Festival. Fun for kids and adults alike, the festival will run from Wednesday, January 8 until Saturday, March 14, offering a host of fun activities and a Lego Ninjago-themed Imagine Show.

There will be seven Lego-themed zones at the festival, located across the mall in both indoor and outdoor venues. The sections will be dedicated to Lego City, Lego Friends, Lego Duplo, Lego Ninjago, Lego Technic, Lego Architecture, Lego Shadow Runner and Lego Jungle. With more than one million Lego bricks, guests will be able to try their hands at building sculptures of trains, fire engines or even a Burj Khalifa model.

More than one million Lego bricks will be used to create the Lego Festival at Dubai Festival City Mall.

"We have created the seven unique zones at the Festival to build genuine connections with visitors through engaging and interactive experiences inspired by their favourite Lego brands and characters," Urszula Bieganska, Lego Middle East and Africa's head of marketing said of the festival.

"We’ve tailor-made the festival activities and created a special journey with the aim of ensuring everyone, no matter what age, has an incredible time. Fans of our popular Ninjago characters will enjoy seeing them come to life for the first time through the impressive record-breaking Imagine projection that embraces the power of fire, laser and light.”

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.

A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.

Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.

A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.

On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.

The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.

Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.

The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.
