Celebrity couples breaking up and filing for divorce always make headlines. When a famous couple announces that they are parting ways, a spate of news articles, gossip columns and front page stories has become the norm.

When celebrities split, there's a public desire for all the juicy details and platforms such as Twitter are often where fans go to find out more and publicly take a side. Which is why legal company Wright Hassall has analysed tweets sent over the last 10 years in relation to A-list divorces.

The UK lawyers referenced almost 800,000 tweets specifically about high-profile divorces to come up with a ranking of the top 20 most talked about celebrity splits on Twitter.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 2016 break-up ranks in first place as the most talked about divorce on Twitter, with over 128,947 Brangelina tweets recorded.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who announced in February this year that they were set to divorce, is another of the most talked about divorces of the decade on Twitter according to the study which found more than 78,000 tweets on the subject.

The reality TV star's second marriage to US basketball player Kris Humphries, is the second-most talked about celeb divorce analysed, with over 100,000 tweets.

The top 5 celeb splits on Twitter

1. The end of Brangelina

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie announced their split in 2016, but five years later the divorce has still to be finalised. Custody battles over the couple's six children seem to be the major sticking point in leaving things unresolved. Brad Pitt has allegedly been seeking 50 per cent physical and legal custody of his children, while Angelina Jolie has reportedly been pushing for more. On Twitter, the divorce was tweeted about almost 130,000 times.

2. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' 72-day marriage

Despite making headlines this year for her recent split from Kanye West, it's Kim Kardashian's second marriage to American basketball player Kris Humphries that ranks as the second most talked about celebrity divorce this decade. The pair split in 2011, after a whirlwind 72 day union. Their wedding was televised, fuelling speculation at the time that it was a publicity stunt, a claim disputed by both parties. The divorce took two more years to finalise and has been tweeted about 103,113 times.

3. Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's speedy settlement

When the girl-next-door actor from Dawson's Creek married one of Hollywood's leading men, it looked set to be a fairy-tale romance. After two months of dating, the pair got engaged and were married in 2006. Fast-forward six years and Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise filed for divorce. Less than a month later, Katie was given full custody of the couple's daughter Suri and Tom was ordered to pay child support, although the payments are not as high as they could have been. Twitter was engrossed in the speedy proceedings and the divorce rendered no less than 83,976 tweets.

4. KimYe no more

In February this year, Kim Kardashian West filed for divorce from Kanye West after nearly seven years of marriage. One of the most followed celebrity unions of the 21st century, it's no big surprise that the divorce ranks in Twitter's most talked about celeb divorces of the decade according to Wright Hassall's data with 78,424 tweets so far. The reality TV star and hip-hop phenomenon have four children together. The divorce was initially said to be amicable, but this has since been disputed with Kardashian saying West's tweets calling her and her mother "white supremacists" was a final straw.

5. Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom's divorce

Another famous Kardashian uncoupling rounds out the top five most talked about celebrity divorces of the decade on Twitter according to the study.

Kim's little sister Khloe split from basketball star Lamar Odom in 2013. The pair were first married in 2009, exactly one month after the Kardashian met the former Los Angeles Lakers player. The divorce was messy, with Odom admitting he had been unfaithful and abusive to his ex-wife, and Kardashian fighting to overturn a prenup that deemed the pair should split their production company and joint checking account. The twitterati were enthralled by the split, posting 70,969 tweets about the uncoupling, found Wright Hassall.
