Kuwait will continue to welcome domestic workers as it gears up to re-open flights to residents on Sunday, according to a circular from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Covid-19 case numbers surged in recent weeks after a significant decline in December 2020, but the country is easing travel and social restrictions, with beauty salons and health clubs going from from stage five to stage 4 lockdowns.

On Wednesday, Kuwait registered 1,017 new cases and five deaths, bringing the total number to 180,505 coronavirus cases and 1,019 deaths.

On Tuesday, Health Minister Dr Bassel Al Sabah said of the 137,000 people inoculated, 119,000 are Kuwaiti citizens – meaning  18,000 expats received the jab. Frontline workers have priority when receiving Covid-19 vaccinations.

Dr Al Sabah stirred some controversy by saying the Covid-19 pandemic would last “for ever”.
