ABU DHABI // Construction of the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum has reached a major milestone with the installation of the final piece of a 7,000-tonne dome.
The puzzle-shaped dome - the museum's most prominent feature - is made up of 85 large steel parts, each weighing up to 70 tonnes.
Although the dome sits on 120 temporary support towers, once they are removed it will rest on four permanent pillars.
The dome will be part of the much-heralded 'rain of light' effect in the museum, with star-shaped aluminium inserts.
Ali Al Hammadi, chief executive officer at the Tourism Development & Investment Company, said work was progressing as planned.
"The execution of the design is very complex and one that is unprecedented in the architectural world," he said.
So far, the construction of all the museum galleries has been completed structurally, along with the concrete work for the museum's basement levels.
