Etihad in codeshare with Qantas

Etihad Airways today announced a new codeshare agreement with Qantas Airways in the Abu Dhabi carrier's latest move to penetrate the Australian market. The closer commercial co-operation between the two airlines means Etihad will fly into Melbourne for the first time, and gives Qantas its first direct connections with Middle East destinations. The codeshare agreement will take effect on March 29. The airline already has flights to Sydney and Brisbane.

Etihad also hopes to put its name on Telstra Dome, the football stadium it sponsors in Melbourne, to coincide with the new flights. However, the move has been controversial in Australia and the subject of legal manoeuvres. The codeshare agreement means passengers will see Etihad's two-letter 'EY' code on selected Qantas domestic services that operate beyond Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. In addition, Etihad passengers will be able to transfer to daily domestic Qantas flights from Melbourne to Auckland in New Zealand.

"Australia represents a key market for Etihad and one in which we are keen to grow further," said James Hogan, the airline's chief executive. The Qantas routes within Australia covered by the new arrangement will initially include services between Sydney and three Australian cities: Cairns, Melbourne and Adelaide. ashah@thenational.ae

Four motivational quotes from Alicia's Dubai talk

“The only thing we need is to know that we have faith. Faith and hope in our own dreams. The belief that, when we keep going we’re going to find our way. That’s all we got.”

“Sometimes we try so hard to keep things inside. We try so hard to pretend it’s not really bothering us. In some ways, that hurts us more. You don’t realise how dishonest you are with yourself sometimes, but I realised that if I spoke it, I could let it go.”

“One good thing is to know you’re not the only one going through it. You’re not the only one trying to find your way, trying to find yourself, trying to find amazing energy, trying to find a light. Show all of yourself. Show every nuance. All of your magic. All of your colours. Be true to that. You can be unafraid.”

“It’s time to stop holding back. It’s time to do it on your terms. It’s time to shine in the most unbelievable way. It’s time to let go of negativity and find your tribe, find those people that lift you up, because everybody else is just in your way.”

What is the FNC?

The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.
