DUBAI // An 8.4-kilometre cycling and running track has opened in the Dh35 billion Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City, District One development.
More than 50 cyclists and joggers came out to test the track, which runs around the forthcoming residential area that will lie 4km from Burj Khalifa.
The track is lit by solar powered lights for minimal energy consumption and feature several rest areas.
“The launch of the District One Cycling and Running track is a significant milestone for Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City’s District One,” said Saeed Al Tayer, chairman and chief executive of Meydan Group.
“We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made so far.
“The launch is testament to our support of the local community and commitment to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.”
The district will eventually include parks, beaches and 7km of lagoons. Phase One of the project will be ready for handover in the middle of next year.

Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.
