They may be not be made for walking but this US$3.2 million pair of boots are certainly made for admiring.
The fancy footwear was conceived as part of the Belgian Spirit programme dedicated to that country’s creativity at the Business of Design Week in Hong Kong at the end of last year.
The boots, believed to be the world’s most expensive, were the result of a collaboration of two Antwerp-based companies: the diamond company Diarough and the fashion house A F Vandevorst.
The Belgian husband-wife team, Filip Arickx and An Vandevorst, designed the pair of black leather ankle boots, with a concealed wedge and paisley pattern, completely covered in 38,883 white, champagne, grey and pink diamonds from Diarough, amounting to a total of 1,527 carats.
A team of craftsmen at Diarough’s Indian manufacturing plant painstakingly set each diamond onto the boots, which also incorporated 4,753 grams of gold. A F Vandevorst’s cross-shaped logo is depicted in extremely rare reddish-pink diamonds.
The whole process, from designing the boots, producing them, selecting, sorting and shipping the diamonds to finally setting the diamonds took 30,000 man hours.
The footwear was unveiled on December 4 at Sevva restaurant, one of the most exclusive venues in downtown Hong Kong, and were worn by the Chinese artist Yi Zhou. Vogue China has described Ms Yi as “the modern-day Chinese Hitchcock, Yoko Ono and Cindy Sherman all in one.”
Belgium’s Queen Mathilde was joined by 400 other VIP guests to see the boots for the first time.
They are now on display at Antwerp’s Museum Aan de Stroom but for anyone out there who wants to put a shine in their step, the boots are also up for sale.
Those whose clothing budget doesn’t quite stretch to multiple millions may take heart from knowing that the regular price for a pair of the designers’ boots ranges from $300 to $1,800.

Three-day coronation
Royal purification
The entire coronation ceremony extends over three days from May 4-6, but Saturday is the one to watch. At the time of 10:09am the royal purification ceremony begins. Wearing a white robe, the king will enter a pavilion at the Grand Palace, where he will be doused in sacred water from five rivers and four ponds in Thailand. In the distant past water was collected from specific rivers in India, reflecting the influential blend of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology on the coronation. Hindu Brahmins and the country's most senior Buddhist monks will be present. Coronation practices can be traced back thousands of years to ancient India.
The crown
Not long after royal purification rites, the king proceeds to the Baisal Daksin Throne Hall where he receives sacred water from eight directions. Symbolically that means he has received legitimacy from all directions of the kingdom. He ascends the Bhadrapitha Throne, where in regal robes he sits under a Nine-Tiered Umbrella of State. Brahmins will hand the monarch the royal regalia, including a wooden sceptre inlaid with gold, a precious stone-encrusted sword believed to have been found in a lake in northern Cambodia, slippers, and a whisk made from yak's hair.
The Great Crown of Victory is the centrepiece. Tiered, gold and weighing 7.3 kilograms, it has a diamond from India at the top. Vajiralongkorn will personally place the crown on his own head and then issues his first royal command.
The audience
On Saturday afternoon, the newly-crowned king is set to grant a "grand audience" to members of the royal family, the privy council, the cabinet and senior officials. Two hours later the king will visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred space in Thailand, which on normal days is thronged with tourists. He then symbolically moves into the Royal Residence.
The procession
The main element of Sunday's ceremonies, streets across Bangkok's historic heart have been blocked off in preparation for this moment. The king will sit on a royal palanquin carried by soldiers dressed in colourful traditional garb. A 21-gun salute will start the procession. Some 200,000 people are expected to line the seven-kilometre route around the city.
Meet the people
On the last day of the ceremony Rama X will appear on the balcony of Suddhaisavarya Prasad Hall in the Grand Palace at 4:30pm "to receive the good wishes of the people". An hour later, diplomats will be given an audience at the Grand Palace. This is the only time during the ceremony that representatives of foreign governments will greet the king.

Volunteers offer workers a lifeline
Community volunteers have swung into action delivering food packages and toiletries to the men.
When provisions are distributed, the men line up in long queues for packets of rice, flour, sugar, salt, pulses, milk, biscuits, shaving kits, soap and telecom cards.
Volunteers from St Mary’s Catholic Church said some workers came to the church to pray for their families and ask for assistance.
Boxes packed with essential food items were distributed to workers in the Dubai Investments Park and Ras Al Khaimah camps last week. Workers at the Sonapur camp asked for Dh1,600 towards their gas bill.
“Especially in this year of tolerance we consider ourselves privileged to be able to lend a helping hand to our needy brothers in the Actco camp," Father Lennie Connully, parish priest of St Mary’s.
Workers spoke of their helplessness, seeing children’s marriages cancelled because of lack of money going home. Others told of their misery of being unable to return home when a parent died.
“More than daily food, they are worried about not sending money home for their family,” said Kusum Dutta, a volunteer who works with the Indian consulate.
