The smartphone industry, which expects very little or no growth this year, is going through one of the toughest phases of its history.
The industry fell globally by more than 5 per cent year in 2018 from 2017, in its first-ever full-year decline, Boston research company Strategy Analytics said. Future forecasts are also gloomy, as another US researcher, Gartner, is expecting only 1.5 to 3 per cent growth in the next five years in the market.
However, in a bid to beat negative market sentiments and mounting competition, smartphone manufacturers are trying every bit to survive - with newer products being launched every two to three months, giving the mobile-wielding world (some 2.1 billion people strong) more choices to consider.
The latest entrant is Samsung’s S10 Series, unveiled on Wednesday in San Francisco. The flagship device is the S10+, considered a strong contender against Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro, launched in October 2018, and Apple’s iPhone XS Max that hit the shelves in September last year.
The National dove into the nitty-gritty of the current top smartphone options to provide a quick comparison of the competition.
How big is the camera?
Coming with five cameras; three on the rear and two on the front, the S10+ certainly adds to the smartphone photography. A first for the S series, the Galaxy S10+ offers an ultra-wide lens with a 123-degree field of view, like the human eye, so what you see is what’s in frame. This is perfect for impressive landscape shots and big panoramas. Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro has three rear-facing cameras with one in the front whereas Apple’s iPhone XS Max comes with only dual camera lenses on the rear and one on the front.
Who added the most juice?
The S10+ comes with a 4,100-mAh (milli Ampere hours) long-lasting battery that promises fast charging. The Mate 20 Pro featured ground-breaking improvement on battery life last year when it introduced a high-density 4200-mAh battery. Huawei and Samsung are far ahead of the iPhone XS Max that houses a 3,174-mAh battery.
How much does it cost?
Targeting high-end consumers, the S10+ will be priced at Dh3,599 (128GB) but it seems still within the budget when compared to its nearest rivals. The Mate 20 Pro (6GB + 128GB configuration) is available for almost Dh4,000. Whereas, famously pricey Apple offers the iPhone XS Max, starting at 64GB of capacity, at Dh4,400.
How about the display?
The Samsung Galaxy S10+ comes with a 16.3cm curved dynamic AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display that is a step ahead of the OLED display. An AMOLED display ensures the illumination of each pixel, resulting in a brighter display. Apple meanwhile comes with 16.5cm all-screen OLED multi-touch display and the Mate 20 Pro has 16.3cm OLED display.
When is the S10+ available in the UAE?
Pre-order will start on February 21 with devices in-hand by March 8. Samsung is planning the Gulf region’s launch in Dubai on March 6.

It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.
Today we are taking the next step in this journey—well, it’s more like a leap, and a big one: in a few minutes, we’ll announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Careem. Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.

What is myofascial pain syndrome?
Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.
What is myofascial or trigger-point release?
Releasing these nodules requires a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to release muscular shortness and tightness. This eliminates restrictions in connective tissue in orderto restore motion and alleviate pain. Therapy balls have proven effective at causing enough commotion in the tissue, prompting the release of these hard knots.
