ABU DHABI // Despite the dangers, 24 per cent of internet users in the UAE believe their passwords are of no value to cyber criminals, according to a survey.

Conversely, the survey – conducted by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International – found that 47 per cent of UAE respondents listed passwords among the valuable information they would not want stolen.

The data indicated only 20 per cent of users create separate passwords for each online account, while 5 per cent use password storage software.

Almost one in five surveyed “take the easy way out” by writing down their passwords in a notebook, 11 per cent stored them on electronic files, and 6 per cent left them on a sticker near a computer. Twenty-two per cent of respondents said they shared their passwords with family members and friends, compromising their online security.

“Complex passwords unique to each account, carefully stored in a safe place, will save you a lot of trouble,” said Peter Aleshkin, a manager with Kaspersky Lab.
