A walk along the mangroves in Abu Dhabi has just become more social with the opening of shops, cafes and a place to stretch the muscles.

The Eastern Mangroves Promenade, a part of the Eastern Mangroves complex, officially opened Monday. Spread over 3,500 square metres of leasable space, it features restaurants, health, beauty and leisure outlets, and a Waitrose supermarket.

In operation since November, it currently has four cafes, with three more to open in the next quarter, and two salons.

Designed on the lines of an old-fashioned souq, the shops have a pedestrian zone stretching in front of them allowing jogging and biking activities, while extensive parking provides spaces for 370 vehicles with valet available.

The promenade overlooks a 30-berth marina, accessible from the walk.

“It is the first open air retail and leisure destination of its kind in Abu Dhabi,” said Angus Woodhead, the director of retail development at developer Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC).

“Eastern Mangroves Promenade is peaceful, sophisticated and picturesque – the perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy the uninterrupted views over the stunning mangroves.”
