Olympic ceremony to go mad for

I have to admit, I was somewhat sceptical about the London Olympics.

It involves too many events I know nothing about and I thought there was no real showpiece "wow" factor finale that everyone could enjoy.

Trying to keep on top of so many events on different days in different places seemed all too difficult. I mean, cricket is one of my favourite sports but I can barely keep up to date with which South Africa players are winning Test matches.

Keeping up with the Olympics seemed too much like hard work. So I was sceptical. But no longer.

It seems London and the Olympics is buzzing, much like when Oasis were popular in the "Britpop" 1990s but with running shoes and no cigarettes or scowling.

Even the most curmudgeonly of British cynics seem to be enjoying themselves, apart from that perennial sour-face Morrissey, of course. The miserablist one-time British pop crooner of the 1990s has described the event as "blustering jingoism". Still, dreary moaning is his very well-worn shtick.

So, what if you fancied being spontaneous and jumping on a flight, at an inflated price, to the Olympic closing ceremony this Sunday?

Well, the cost of soaking up the action is likely to be enormous with tickets on the official website going for £1,500 (Dh8,585). There were tickets at £20 but, unsurprisingly, they do not seem to be available anymore. But even at £1,500, you might still argue the case for going.

The opening ceremony by the film director Danny Boyle was well received and the closing ceremony is also set to be similarly spectacular.

Completing the time travel back to the 1990s, the Spice Girls are rumoured to be reforming to play at the finale, as well as One Direction, so start practicing your "panicked scream" voice.

Aside from the closing ceremony, thereis a concert headlined by Blur, another band popular in the 1990s and supported by The Specials and New Order. Tickets are about £300.

So if you are in the mood for splashing some sterling on Olympic gold, go mad for it - safe in the knowledge Morrissey won't be there to spoil the party.
