Majid Al Futtaim Finance is hoping for a slice of the growing e-commerce market in the UAE, with the launch of its latest pre-paid Visa card, MyNetCard.
Designed solely for online shopping, MyNetCard is used like a normal credit card, but does not require the usual credit check, application process or bank account.
According to Euromonitor, the research and information firm, online sales in the UAE reached US$226.8 million (Dh833m) last year and are expected to grow to $270.9m this year.
"MyNetCard is ideal for those who want added security when making online purchases, or for those who don't necessarily qualify for a credit card," says Rasool Hujair, the chief executive of Majid Al Futtaim Finance.
Majid Al Futtaim Finance has linked up with VOX Cinemas to offer users of the card value-added benefits, including the chance to win a Dh1,000 cash prize loaded onto their card if they use it to book film tickets with VOX.
MyNetCard can be bought over the counter at a range of outlets, including Enoc and Eppco petrol stations and Carrefour hyper- markets.

The currency conundrum
Russ Mould, investment director at online trading platform AJ Bell, says almost every major currency has challenges right now. “The US has a huge budget deficit, the euro faces political friction and poor growth, sterling is bogged down by Brexit, China’s renminbi is hit by debt fears while slowing Chinese growth is hurting commodity exporters like Australia and Canada.”
Most countries now actively want a weak currency to make their exports more competitive. “China seems happy to let the renminbi drift lower, the Swiss are still running quantitative easing at full tilt and central bankers everywhere are actively talking down their currencies or offering only limited support," says Mr Mould.
This is a race to the bottom, and everybody wants to be a winner.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
